The School of Social Work makes available a limited number of professional development fellowships for doctoral students at any year in the program. These awards are intended to support student participation in professional development opportunities such as training in research methods, teaching practices, etc. (online or in-person), qualitative software purchase, or conference attendance* (see note below).
*Please first submit for the PhD Student Travel Scholarship if attending a conference for professional development. Once you have been awarded a Travel Scholarship you can apply for a Professional Development Fellowship in the same academic year.
These awards, of up to $1,000 per year per student, are made on an ongoing basis annually. Students may request funds for more than one conference, seminar, or training in a given academic year.
To apply, complete the PhD Student Professional Development Fellowship Form, which can be found below.
All requests must include:
- A narrative of up to two pages that provides the name, location, date, and purpose of the training or conference or software purchase, your role in the activity, and any anticipated outcomes expected from your participation.
- A separate budget for the entire costs associated with the training/conference/software, and the amount you are requesting.
In addition, if you are traveling a separate School of Social Work Pre-Travel Request Form must be completed: ssw.uconn.edu/pretripform/
No funds will be approved retroactively to student participation/attendance at a training or conference. Whenever possible, please submit your request at least one month prior to the event.
Questions about the award should be directed to Cristina Mogro-Wilson, PhD Program Director.
