Two members of the UConn School of Social Work community recently shared their inspiring work at the International Society for Contemplative Research Conference (Nov. 3–6) at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
✨ Caitlin Elsaesser, associate professor, presented “Co-Designing a Mindfulness-Based Intervention with Community Violence Intervention Workers and Youth: The Power of Participatory Research.”
✨ Vivien Roman-Hampton, Ph.D. student and research assistant (MSW, LICSW), presented “Mindfulness as a Tool for Street Outreach Workers: Supporting the Supporters in Communities Affected by Gun Violence.”
Together, they also led a collaborative talk titled “Nurturing the Mindful Researcher: Integrating Contemplative Practices to Promote Life-Giving Cultures in Mindfulness Research.”
👏 Elsaesser and Roman-Hampton also co-teach the SSW course Engaged Mindfulness, bringing their passion for contemplative practice—activities that help people develop greater awareness, presence, and connection—directly into the classroom.

🦉 Whooo’s visiting the UConn School of Social Work?
On Tuesday morning, SSW staff discovered an injured Northern Saw-whet Owl in distress.
The owl, later named Oliver, was likely migrating south for the winter and collided with reflective glass in Hartford buildings. Showing true owl-truism, the compassionate social work staff gave a hoot and gently captured Oliver and brought him inside for some rest and TLC.
After hours, staff brought Oliver to A Place Called Hope, a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center in Killingworth, Connecticut that specializes in helping birds of prey. There, he received the full VIP—Very Important Predator—treatment: a check-up, X-rays, and some anti-inflammatory and pain medications. The scans revealed issues in his right hip joint and some spinal trauma, but Oliver proved to be one tough bird. 🦉🦉
We’re owl-fully happy to report that Oliver survived the night, and APCH rehabbers say "with critical care, meds, cold laser therapy, and time, he will recover his abilities and ultimately release."
In the meantime, they say "the risks of losing him are real. Send healing energies for this little patient as we proceed with treatment. He certainly needs all the help he can get." 🦉
