Connecticut School Social Work Certification

Help meet the mental health needs of children and youth  in Connecticut by becoming a school social worker.

Across the United States, regardless of geography, the mental/behavioral health needs of children and youth are clear and urgent. In the Northeast corridor, with a highly diverse population of over 50 million, the scope of the behavioral health needs of children and youth is nothing short of overwhelming. Schools, particularly those in underserved communities, are on the frontlines of battling to address this acute threat to an entire generation. Over the last several years, Connecticut’s public schools have experienced a rise in the number of students with mental health concerns.

UConn School of Social Work provides opportunities for students to specialize in school social work in their coursework and practicum. Upon completion of the MSW and eligible coursework, students may apply for a Connecticut School Social Work Certification.

Students who are interested in pursuing school social work as an area of focus will be placed in a school setting, and can take the following elective courses:

  • Direct Practice in Schools for Children with Educational Disabilities and Their Families (required course for state certification)
  • School-Based Behavioral Health Interventions

Students in Hartford, Stamford, and online will be eligible to participate in a school placement and take the Direct Practice in Schools course that is required for Connecticut state certification.
