Chenglin Hong, PhD

Assistant Professor

Dr. Hong’s research is dedicated to addressing health disparities among sexual and gender minorities, particularly within LGBTQ+ communities. Trained as a social worker and community-based participatory researcher, he focuses on developing and testing interventions to improve sexual health and mental health outcomes for gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men (SMM), with a strong emphasis on HIV prevention and intimate partner violence (IPV) both in the U.S. and globally. His work bridges the fields of social work, public health, psychology, and implementation science, aiming to create interventions that challenge violence, stigma, HIV, and other syndemic conditions within SMM communities. Dr. Hong is particularly interested in the acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of eHealth, mHealth, and other technology-based interventions to promote IPV help-seeking and HIV/STI prevention services, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) among SMM. His research spans multiple regions in Global Health settings, including the U.S., China, Kenya, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Dr. Hong has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals such as the Journal of the International AIDS Society, Trauma, Violence, & Abuse, and AIDS and Behavior. He has presented more than 70 abstracts at leading interdisciplinary conferences, including the International AIDS Conference. His work has been funded by the American Psychological Association Science Directorate and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and has been recognized by the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work (GADE).

Dr. Hong earned his Ph.D. in Social Welfare from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and holds dual master’s degrees in Social Work (MSW) and Public Health (MPH) from the University of Washington (Seattle). He received specialized training in HIV and Implementation Science through the Mid-Atlantic CFAR Consortium (MACC+) Implementation Science Hub at Johns Hopkins University and completed a visiting scholar program with the HIV Implementation Science Coordination Initiative at Northwestern University.
