Rachel Schwartz, Ph.D.

MSW Program Director and Associate Professor-in-Residence


Rachel Schwartz is the Master of Social Work Program director and associate professor-in-residence at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work.

Her research interests include online education, macro social work, gender issues, and interpersonal violence.

Dr. Schwartz’s scholarship regularly reaches a national audience on issues related to social work education, including online education, student supports, practicum education and technology. Her work has appeared in Advances in Social Work, Social Work and Welfare Education, Journal of Teaching in Social Work, and Journal of Social Work Education, among others.

At the School of Social Work, Dr. Schwartz teaches Analysis of Social Welfare Policy and Macro Foundation Practice.

As the director of the MSW Program, Dr. Schwartz oversees all aspects of the program including teaching, curriculum development, and ensuring it meets accreditation standards. She also advises online program students.

She’s currently a member of the Council on Leadership Development with the Council on Social Work Education, member of the advisory board for the Social Work Distance Education Conference, and a leadership council member of the Association of MSW Program Directors.

Dr. Schwartz received her Ph.D. in higher education at the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education. Her dissertation focused on the understanding the experiences of women with multiple roles in online social work education programs. She also earned an MSW from Rutgers University School of Social Work with a specialization in non-profit and public management, and a BS in administration of justice and English from Rutgers University.
